Please join Thailand Progressive Jewish Community for a lecture by Ruth Gerson on her book "Jews in Thailand".

Ruth Gerson studied culture and religions of Asian countries concentrating on Thailand, Myanmar and India. She has lectured and led tours for NMV, Siam Society and other organizations. Her books include Traditional Festivals in Thailand, Jews in Thailand, and she currently writes articles for Thailand Tatler and Big Chilli.

Her book, co-written with Stephen Mallinger, recounts how the first Jews arrived in Ayutthaya in the early 17th century, most likely for the purpose of trade. Jews who arrived in Siam two centuries later had such colorful occupations as wigmaker, gunsmith, stage production, doctors and gem dealers, the latter trade for which they have become known in Thailand. Some helped establish significant institutions such as the Thai stock market. They represented ethnic groups originating both in Europe (Ashkenazi) and Middle Eastern (Sephardi) traditions.
